Otago University lecturer Ian Chapman has just released a book titled ‘The Dunedin Sound’, looking at that golden age in the early 80s when New Zealand post-punk was in the spotlight.
Iconic guitar bands The Clean, The Chills, The Bats, Straightjacket Fits and Chris Knox’s Tall Dwarves all came out of the movement - and it also established indie label Flying Nun internationally.
The book features many never-before-seen photographs, biographies for nearly two dozen bands, and a series of essays by many who were involved in the scene at the time.
Chapman explains, “I go off to musicology conferences around the world usually talking about David Bowie and when people find out I am from Dunedin, often they come up to me and say 'what about The Chills, The Verlaines, The Clean?'...The fact is, The Dunedin Sound firmly exists in the vernacular of popular music so why try and deny it?”
