To celebrate ‘Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori’ last week, Seth Haapu delivered a beautiful performance of Crowded House’s ‘Don’t Dream It’s Over’ in te reo.
Accompanying himself on the keyboard, Haapu belted out the cover in a NZ Herald exclusive, showing off his golden pipes and effortless performance style.
He explained that while he usually sings his own material in english, the performance meant a great deal to him, saying, “When I sing in te reo Māori there's a sense of a deeper connection to my heritage and identity. I'm moved by the message of the song in a way that goes beyond my ability to articulate."
He added that te reo is a "treasure" which "keeps our language and stories alive."
Haapu has been busy working on the follow up album to his 2011 debut, which is rumoured to feature collaborations with some of New Zealand’s finest. The album is due for release some time this summer.
