MGMT: ‘Little Dark Age’

Psychedelic rockers MGMT are back, with a new synth-pop tune that pays tribute to The Cure.

‘Little Dark Age’ is a dissonant goth inspired tune; with dark synths, harpsichord, and a breathily-sung ominous melody. It’s different, but after a couple of listens it definitely sticks with you.

Band members Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser have reinvented the wheel again this time; long gone are the carefree hippy days of ‘Electric Feel’ (which came out almost a decade ago, can you believe?), they’re now painted up with makeup and have spiky Edward Scissorhands hair.

The video, directed by Nathaniel Axel & David MacNutt, is a medieval gothic fantasy featuring strange contraptions and a haunted house. Connan Mockasin runs in and out of the shots (looking at the camera disturbingly), while pieces of fruit and wood get axed on a chopping block.

‘Little Dark Age’ is the title track of the duo’s upcoming album, and MGMT recently told Zane Lowe, “We started and finished 'Little Dark Age' the song I think in March or something like that, and then finished the album about a month later."

Here’s hoping the new album is a keeper. Watch the video for ‘Little Dark Age’ below:
