Psychiatrists at Cambridge University have been noticing that Hip Hop lyrics are effective at treating depression.
Dr Becky Inkster (a neuroscientist) and Dr Akeem Sule (a consultant psychiatrist) explained in medical journal ‘The Lancet Psychiatry’ that they’ve been using songs from artists like Grandmaster Flash and Notorious B.I.G. in therapy.
The initiative is called ‘Hip Hop Psych’ and it’s been getting media coverage around the world.
Their idea is that Hip Hop lyrics, which deal with life struggles and often directly address addictions and mental health problems, are thought to give a feeling of solidarity to those dealing with mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety and schizophrenia.
